Even the smallest of steps you take towards learning new ways to communicate with others, make a big impact by training your brain. The kind of training that requires repetition and practice.
When we speak to be heard, are we using the words that get the point across? Do we have what it takes to be quiet when we really need to listen? For a lot of us, staying quiet through someone else speaking takes considerable effort. We want to contribute, share a laugh.
There’s always time to share a laugh.
Certainly, laughter over those conversations where there is a fumble over phrasing, or an acronym gets misused. It can lead to more engaging conversations, especially with someone you want to get to know. Mindfulness and care will balance out the conversation when the topic is sincere, stressful, or uncertain.
All good communication skills need perfecting. Just like flossing each day, find yourself in a conversation each day. Practice speaking and listening, you’ll notice a difference. You may find yourself prepared ahead of time for a chat with your family or friends. Especially if the topic or scenario could potentially be stressful.
